U.S. Army veteran Abner Gonzalez walked into Pet Supplies Plus in South Lyon thinking he was there to talk about Dogs on Deployment.
It's a nonprofit that takes care of dogs while their military owners are deployed.
But he was really there to be surprised with a $500 gift card to the store to spend on his German Shepherd, Sophie.
“I feel very blessed that you picked me for it, but honestly it’s a good reminder to know that people and companies like this really do care,” says Gonzalez.
“The contribution the military makes to our country is extremely important and, as a pet company, we’re only too happy to marry the two together and show our appreciation for all that he’s done,” adds Denise Quinn of Pet Supplies Plus marketing.
Abner and Sophie are also being honored at the Quick Lane Bowl game at Ford Field.
