Monica Munir is an Army veteran and cancer survivor who is hoping to soon become a homeowner.
Munir says she never thought she could own a house, but it's becoming a reality thanks to a veteran program with Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County.
“Monica’s fantastic. There’s something special about her. She’s a survivor. She’s been through so many different challenges. She served our country, she fought cancer and it’s her time now,” says Stephanie Osterland, director of partner and community programs for Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County.
Volunteers started working on Monica's house August 2015. It was supposed to be finished in February, but because of a lack of volunteers, it's still under construction.
"What we’re really trying to do is get this home finished so she can move in,” says Osterland.
Habitat is asking people to sign up to help finish this house for the local veteran and cancer survivor.
“She just deserves it. She deserves this opportunity,” says Monica's sister, Victoria Munir.
"At one time, I didn’t think I was going to live through the summer and, now it’s many years later, and I’m looking at a house that I’ll own," says Monica. "Relieved, happy, excited to start another chapter of my life. I’m literally so grateful.”
