An Army veteran is recovering after being the victim of a shooting and carjacking early Monday morning in Highland Park.

Reginald Carr was waiting in his car around 3:30 a.m. near the corner of Highland and Hamilton when two men approached him asking for a cigarette.

He said no, but they didn't believe him after seeing a box of cigarettes in his ashtray. One came around the driver side, Carr said, but he still said no, so they walked away.

That's when Carr got out to talk with a friend, but the suspects followed. They shot him multiple times and then took his car.

Despite being shot and losing his car, he told 7 Action News he is thankful to be alive and walking.

Police are looking for his 2007 black Chevy Trailblazer and his loaded .22 cal. handgun inside. It's not clear if the gun was registered to Carr, but they are still investigating.

Anyone with information is asked to call Highland Park police.
