The Mayor of Dearborn Heights confirms to 7 Action News, the city could be a week away from starting the process to buy homes on Hanover Street.

The area consistently floods when it rains, and Thursday was no different.

Mayor Dan Paletko tells us federal grant money should be here in just a few days, and the process would start immediately.

The city could buy up to 15 homes along the north branch of the Ecorse Creek. Paletko says if some sell their homes and others do not, some homeowners could be living next to vacant land.

The homes that are sold would be torn down to make way for a natural waterway.

Resident Patrick Willis says, "They call it the toilet bowl, the infamous Hanover Street."

Mayor Paletko says there's really not many other options, understanding the issues residents are dealing with on a constant basis.
