Early Wednesday morning, police announced they have two people in custody after an assault in Eastpointe.

The assault was originally reported as a shooting, but police later clarified that the victim had suffered a head wound during a fight. It was not the result of a shooting.

Police say the assault happened around 9:30 p.m. at a house on Schroeder, between 9 Mile and Stephens Road.

According to police, a family had gathered to mourn the passing of a loved one and there was an argument over items that had belonged to the deceased.

A 52-year-old man from Detroit was assaulted, police said. He was taken to the hospital and is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Police have taken a 49-year-old Detroit resident and a 34-year-old Warren resident into custody.
