High speed chase ends with crash at I-94 rest area

Posted

When a Westland police officer tried to pull over a driver for a traffic violation near Michigan Avenue and Merriman, that driver took off. He then led officers on a high speed chase on I-94.

The chase came to an end at a rest area just east of Rawsonville Road.

“The vehicle tried to exit the freeway at a high rate of speed, hit a tree, and rolled over,” said Sgt. Robert Wilkie.

Wilkie says it turns out the van was stolen after a home invasion this morning.

Fortunately no bystanders and no police were hurt. The driver leading the chase suffered only minor injuries.

Westland Police arrested him.

“The officers here did a very good job. They caught the person who needed to be caught without injury to anyone else or themselves. They did exactly what they were supposed to do. They did an outstanding job,” said Wilkie.
