New push for NAACP branch in Grosse Pointes

Posted

There's a new effort to start a local branch of the NAACP in the Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods.

There's been controversy in Gross Pointe Park over large planters placed on Kercheval at the border of the city. Some see it as a makeshift wall, a symbol of racism.

Others say it just the first step in beautifying the area.

One of the people leading the charge is Greg Bowens. He's tells 7 Action News the demographics have been changing in those areas, with more minorities moving in.

He believes this should be reflected with more cops, teachers, and politicians of color.

In order to start a local branch, Bowens says they need at least 50 people. The group would then notify the state NAACP, and a vote would take place in October.

The group is meeting on September 23rd at Rockerfeller's at 7:00 pm in Gross Pointe Park.
