Police investigating Eastland Mall shooting

Posted

Harper Woods police say they are continuing to investigate the fatal shooting at Eastland Mall on Saturday night.

According to police, an 18-year-old man from Eastpointe was killed in the shooting that happened around 6 p.m.

One person was detained at the scene and taken to the Harper Woods Police Department. After being interviewed by deputies, the suspect was released early Sunday morning pending further investigation, according to police.

Right now, police say they do not have a suspect in custody.

The mall was put under lockdown after the shooting and shoppers found themselves trapped as rumors swirled about what happened.

“It was a scary feeling to be shopping, and then the doors start closing down on you,” said Annette Coleman, who was exchanging Christmas gifts when it happened just before six this evening.

Police say it doesn't appear to be robbery or random. It appears the shooter and victim knew each other. They are asking anyone with information to call Harper Woods police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
