Daniel Clancy, 69, had just returned from shopping at Costco when he was attacked in his home in Grosse Pointe Farms Sunday around 4:30 pm.
Clancy, a well-known interior designer with the firm Perlmutter-Freiwald, Inc. in Franklin, is in critical condition after someone stabbed him in the neck and slashed his throat.
Investigators say the attack does not appear to be random.
Police are trying to find out if Clancy either surprised someone who was already in his house, someone walked in with him, or if he was ambushed from behind.
There is blood evidence that a physical altercation began inside the home. There is also a lot of blood outside of Clancy's home on Voltaire Place.
Police say it appears the attacker chased Clancy outside where the assault continued.
We're told a passerby did not see the assault, but saw Clancy on the ground and called 911.
A source says the attacker, or attackers, also tried stealing a piece of art that was left in the middle of the floor with drag marks around it.
Investigators are still searching for suspects and a motive.
Clancy has reportedly lived in the home alone since his longtime partner passed away about a year ago.
Anyone with any information is urged to call Grosse Pointe Farms Police at 313-885-2100.
