(WXYZ) — Rep. Elissa Slotkin condemned the chaos taking place at the U.S. Capitol, calling it an "egregious act."

In an interview with ABC News, Slotkin said the violence is not representative of the majority of the people, even those who voted for President Donald Trump.

"It takes an egregious act like this for many people to realize that you have to make a call, a decision on how you want your country to proceed," she said.

She called on Democrats and Republicans to come together.

"We cannot retreat to our separate silos and think the other group doesn't exist," she said. "We have to accept this is a fragile democracy."

"We have to recommit to doing things that try and build back that connective tissue between Americans because it is abhorrent what we're watching."
