Report: West Elm furniture retailer to open hotels in Detroit

Posted

Make some room Detroit -- that’s the message from well-known furniture retailer West Elm.

But this morning we’re learning it’s not the furniture the company is bringing.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the furniture retailer has set its eyes on the Motor City and plans to open the first of two boutique hotels here in Detroit in 2018.

The news comes on the heels of an announcement by luxury goods maker Shinola -- that they were going to remodel an old building and build a specialty hotel.

WSJ reports the move for West Elm to branch out to the boutique hotel market and dip into the hospitality industry comes at a time when the company is eyeing growth and opening more furniture stores is just not the answer.

Each hotel we’ve learned will have anywhere from 100 to more than 250 rooms.
