RICHMOND, Mich. (WXYZ) — Richmond Schools will resume Monday after having to extend their holiday break due to a ransomware attack.

The viral attack happened over the holiday break, officials say. The virus has affected critical operating systems in the district, including but not limited to heating, telephones, copiers, and classroom technology.

According to the district, phones and copy machines are working, but they don't have internet. They will use paper forms for attendance and paper copies of the emergency cards for students and staff.

District personnel and network server contractors have been working to resolve the problem.

School officials say no student or staff information has been compromised, but the process to fix the issue is very time-consuming.

The FBI and Michigan State Police are still investigating.
