Second Marine recruit from Michigan injured during training in South Carolina

Posted

For the second time this year, a Marine recruit from Michigan mysteriously fell at the Parris Island Marine Corps Training Depot in South Carolina.

7 Action News reported in September that as many as 20 people were being punished for how Raheel Siddiqui from Taylor was treated.

He died after falling about forty feet down a stairwell. The Marine Corps says the 20-year old committed suicide in March after enduring hazing and abuse. His family says he would never take his own life.

Now there is another investigation underway as another recruit fights for his life.

Kristian Gashaj, 18, from Sterling Heights arrived at Parris Island on Oct. 24 and was going through processing. He hadn’t even started training. On Oct. 28, he somehow fell 25-feet from the second floor in the Recruit Processing Center.

"The recruit remains in critical condition at an off-site medical facility. Command representatives from Parris Island are currently with the family at the facility to ensure they are appropriately supported during this difficult time,” said a release sent out by the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Office of Public Affairs. "The command has directed an investigation regarding this incident per standard operating procedures.”

“He is the most energetic guy I know. Happy. He was excited to go in the Marines,” said Renaldo Gashaj, Kristian’s cousin.

Kristian’s family is hoping he wakes up and can tell them himself what happened.

“They say he has a 5 percent chance. But 5 percent is all he needs. He is the strongest guy I know,” said Renaldo.

Jimmy’s Coney Grill in Sterling Heights is hosting a fundraiser for Kristian’s family. To take part, just order food from the restaurant on Thursday. 25 percent of all sales will be donated.

The money will be used for medical expenses and any expenses the family incurs being there for Kristian.

Kristian’s dad lives in Albania, and some money may be used to help him travel to the United States to be by his son’s side in the hospital.

"We have asked a lot of people for their prayers," said Renaldo. " God is the answer.
