(WXYZ) — Sen. Gary Peters shared a deeply personal and transparent story about how his family faced the decision of abortion in a recent Elle Magazine issue.
"It’s a story of gut-wrenching and complicated decisions — but it’s important for folks to understand families face these situations every day," Peters wrote on Twitter Monday.
The article describes Peters as the first senator in history to share a personal story of abortion.
My story is one that’s tragically shared by so many Americans.

Peters says the abortion happened with his first wife in the 1980s. The couple were pregnant with their second child. Peters' wife Heidi was at fourth months when her water broke and the fetus was left without amniotic fluid, creating a dangerous situation for the fetus and the mother.
“I’ve always considered myself pro-choice and believe women should be able to make these decisions themselves, but when you live it in real life, you realize the significant impact it can have on a family,” Peters told Elle.
