A Shelby Township police officer has been placed on administrative leave after shooting and killing a man overnight, according to the police department.

Authorities say officers responded to a call of a stolen vehicle around 1:00 a.m. in the parking lot of Spring Hill Apartment Complex. The man in the stolen vehicle allegedly refused to cooperate with repeated police commands and told the officers he was armed.

An officer then fired his weapon to stop the man's alleged "aggressive action", according to the police department.

“A lot of screaming and people running around and a bunch of police cars," said Ryan Drouillard who lives at Spring Hill Apartments. "It just seems like something from a movie. Like something you don’t think is going to happen then it happens right in front of your place actually.”

The man suffered from a single gunshot wound and was treated by officers before EMS arrived on scene. He was then taken to Troy Beaumont Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He has been identified as 25-year-old Kanwarbir Malhi of Shelby Township.

The involved officer has been placed on administrative leave, and the Macomb County Sheriff's Office has taken over the investigation.

The police chief for the Shelby Township Police Department says they plan to hold a media conference on Monday at 11 a.m. to address the officer-involved shooting.
