Detroit police are investigating an attempted robbery and shootout that occurred at a Family Dollar store on Detroit's west side.

One suspect was shot dead and a 27-year-old security guard was shot and is in critical condition.

The shootout happened at the Family Dollar at 18201 Schoolcraft Road around 7:46 p.m. on Monday.

"This is a huge tragedy," said Tiffany Stewart, commander of Detroit's 6th Precinct. "We are still investigating and still trying to figure out precisely what happened – who shot first and things of that nature."

Residents in the area are asked to stay in their homes.

One robbery suspect fled the scene in a burgundy Nissan Sentra. Police say the suspect is a black man, stands 5-feet, 9-inches tall and weighs about 150 pounds. He was wearing all black clothing and his age is currently unknown.

"They should definitely be concerned," Stewart said of the public. "I would advise the people (to) probably go home and stay in their houses at this point in time. We are actively investigating. Once we get some information on the identity of the suspect inside, we will able to follow up from that point"
