Voters in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties voted in favor to renew the SMART bus millage. It passed with 77 percent of the vote in Oakland County and 73 percent in Wayne County, while narrowly passing in Macomb County by just 23 votes, according to unofficial results from the counties.
The proposal increased the .9863 mills to 1.0 mills for 2018-2021 in Oakland and Macomb counties and helps fund the SMART public transportation system in all three counties. Wayne County residents already pay the rate that Oakland and Macomb residents will pay. It will cost the average homeowner $50 a year for a $100,000 home.
If the millage failed in Macomb County, SMART service in the county would have ended by the end of the year. SMART, which stands for Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation and is the only regional transportation in metro Detroit.
