Somerset Collection in Troy surprises families in need this holiday season

The Somerset Collection in Troy is making spirits bright this holiday season by surprising local families with a gift giveaway.

Somerset used their new delivery service like Santa's sleigh, loading up gifts and delivering them to a few deserving families.

“Why not use our home delivery service to do something very special for families in need,” said Linda McIntosh of the Somerset Collection.

The shopping center worked with the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries to donate money and $30,000 worth of items to eight families in need.

The families just received new homes through the ministry.

It’s great to have a roof over your head — but think about all the things you need in a new home.

“Frying pans for the kitchen and dishes for the dining room table, to clothes and coats and boots for the children," said Linda. "And of course we are getting as many toys and fun things in as we can.”

The Somerset Collection normally donates money to help families in need during the holiday season so they can shop however they like. But this year — with the pandemic — shopping center officials decided to use their new services — like home delivery — to help the families get back on their feet without even leaving their home.

The Somerset Collection has adapted this holiday shopping season because of the pandemic. They offer curbside pickup and a free home delivery service within a 60 mile radius. You get the items the same day if you order before 2 p.m.

That service made it even easier to help the families, and the volunteers were happy to bring cheer!

“It’s sad when you see it on their wish list, like they want something as simple as a blender,” said Dianna Rasha, a volunteer.

After this successful giveaway, the Somerset Collection is already making plans to do it again next year.
