Suspect facing felony charges in deadly hit-and-run of construction worker on I-94

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. (WXYZ) — The suspect in a deadly hit-and-run crash in Macomb County is now facing charges.

Martin Dwayne Smith, a 51-year-old man from Harper Woods, was arraigned on count one: Failure to Stop at Scene of an Accident, When at Fault, Resulting in Death (15 year felony) and count two: Failure to Stop at Scene of an Accident, Resulting in Serious Impairment or Death (5 Year Felony).

Zachary Morisette, 26, was working with the Macomb County Department of Roads on eastbound I-94 south of 9 Mile in St. Clair Shores Monday afternoon when someone hit him and kept going.

Morisette was patching the highway with two trucks when he was hit.

The family is asking all drivers to think of Zach and always slow down for not just road crews, but tow truck drivers, first responders, and anyone on the side of the road.
