WIXOM, Mich. (WXYZ) — A new phone call scam is preying on your worst fears, calling in the middle of the night and hanging up after one ring hoping you'll call back.

“These are rotten people, they’re praying on the fact that you are going to be tired and perhaps nervous about loved one, they’re just horrible people,” said Director of Public Safety for Wixom.

This week, the Federal Communications Commission warned about the scam now dubbed the “One Ring” scam. According to the FCC, robocallers will call in the middle of the night, hanging up after one call ring and often times calling multiple times a night.

If you do call back, the FCC says you run the risk of being connected to a number that is outside the United States and charged per minute fees, much like a 900 number. The FCC says you should not call the number back.

Most of the reports made to the FCC indicate a “222” country code in West Africa, with the majority of people being impacted in New York and Arizona.

However, 7 Action News found two people who received a call overnight from a number starting with 33-891, associated with France.

“This morning they’ve called four different times from three different numbers,” said Kristy Lucas of Wixom.

If you have already been charged, the FCC says recommends calling your phone carried to erase the charges. If they won’t work with you, you should file a complaint with the FCC.
