Thieves use moving van to steal quadriplegic man's dirt bikes from garage

Thieves stole seven dirt bikes from a quadriplegic man with a passion for restoring bikes in Romulus last week.

The robbery was overnight last Thursday, at a house on Homefield Street.

Police said thieves broke a window in the garage to gain entry and hauled away seven out of the eight dirt bikes with a moving truck. A few tools and a chainsaw were also stolen.

Todd Hammond told 7 Action News that he’s devastated by the robbery because it was a hobby he did with his 5-year-old grandson. Before Hammond became a quadriplegic more than 30 years ago, he said he rode dirt bikes competitively and has loved to restore them ever since.

Hammond believes he found one of the stolen bikes for sale on Facebook. Police are looking into the post.
