TRENTON, Mich. (WXYZ) — The Trenton Police Department is getting a new K9 officer that will be named in honor of the city's late mayor.

According to the department, their current K9, Delo, will be at retirement age at the end of this year, so they are in the process of purchasing a new K9.

That new K9 will be named "Stack" in honor of late Mayor Kyle Stack, who unexpectedly died in November.

"Mayor Stack was an animal lover and was extremely proud of K9 Delo and all of the previous K9 officers," police said in the Facebook post. They also said she had made it known she wanted to continue the K9 program.

According to the department, they will pick a candidate from within the department to be the K9 handler and trainer within the net few months.

They have created an account to purchase, train and take care of K9 Stack, and anyone interested in donating can send a check made out to the City of Trenton to the Trenton Police Department at 2872 West Jefferson, Trenton , Mi. 48183 Attn: Director Voss. Please write K9 Stack on the memo line.

We are proud to do this as Mayor Stack's legacy!" they wrote.
