2 vehicles crash into building in Southfield

Posted

Southfield police say a 37-year-old Redford man has been arrested in connection with a wild crash that happened around noon along Telegraph near 10 Mile road.

They say he may have fallen asleep behind the wheel of a pickup truck when he crashed into an SUV driven by a pregnant woman. After that, both vehicles ended up crashing into Elite Fire Systems. Rob Hensley is the owner of that business. He was at his desk just ten feet away.

"I heard screeching. I thought maybe someone slammed on the brakes back at the light and then I looked out my window and those guys didn't stop at all. They must have hit the building going about 45 mph," says Hensley.

Police say the driver of the black SUV is a 27-year-old woman. Action News talked to a man off camera at the scene who says that is his wife. He says she is 9 months pregnant and truly believes "someone was watching over her" since she wasn't injured.

He told Action News that he is amazed that nobody was hurt.

We're told all of the people who usually sit at the front of the business were at lunch or on vacation. Both drivers, who were not hurt, were the only people in the vehicles.

Hensley says what happened today was a "wake-up call". After the mess is cleaned up, he would like to install concrete barriers so something like this doesn't happen again.

The driver of the pick-up truck was arrested for driving with a suspended license.
