In an effort to crack down on speeding drivers, Uber is using smartphone technology to keep an eye on performance.
Uber announced on its official blog that the company is running a pilot program where they use the data to verify feedback from customers.
So, if there’s a complaint that a driver was speeding—Uber can look at the information to see if there’s reason for concern.
The company points to gyrometers, GPS and accelerometers in phones that can show them measurements of small movements or how often a vehicle starts and stops—and the speed.
If there’s an issue with the driving, Uber can reach out. If it turns out the complaint doesn’t have merit, Uber can make sure the driver’s rating isn’t affected.
The company could also figure out the average time it takes an Uber driver to get from Point A to Point B—so if someone gets there much faster than the norm, they can tell them to ease up on the gas.
Uber states in their official blog that new safety solutions are always in the works. Last December, the company announced it was testing out a glowing color bar device in Seattle to help riders find their drivers more easily. The SPOT device is attached to the driver's windshield.
