US Attorney: Gang arrests highlight progress

The FBI, along with law enforcement partners have nabbed a leader of one of Detroit’s deadliest gang, says US Attorney Barbara McQuade.

Its part of the feds’ ongoing effort to dismantle that gang and others wreaking havoc on the city.

McQuade announced a handful of indictments, after a sweep, months in the making. One of the leaders of the Seven Mile Bloods was stopped. The Bloods is one of the city’s most violent gangs, claiming an area off 7 Mile on the east side as their own.

McQuade says Detroit has a neighborhood gang problem. As opposed to some other major cities which see a wider spread presence.

To reduce the problem, she says officials are hard at work on prevention to reduce gang recruitment. And she hopes stories like this put gang leaders on notice.

“Gang violence is one of the drivers of homicide and violent crime in Detroit, so we have made it a focus,” she says.

More indictments could come.
