(WXYZ) — Comedian Wanda Sykes was honored at the Gem Theatre in Detroit on Thursday night. She received the Ruth Ellis Center Legacy Award at the Voices 2019 fundraiser.

The center in Highland Park is the only residential foster care program for LGBTQ youth in the Midwest.

Sykes was honored for being a role model who uses her voice to raise awareness and acceptance.

"I try to speak out for those who are marginalized, especially in my community, the LGBTQ community," she said.

The Ruth Ellis Center is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
