Warren Mayor Jim Fouts is speaking out after a resident stopped a bank robbery in progress.
The incident happened at the Citizens Bank near 9 Mile and Van Dyke on Monday afternoon. The suspect pointed a loaded gun at the tellers and demanded cash.
The Warren resident with a license to carry a weapon, was in the bathroom at the time. When he came out, he took action and stopped the suspect.
He fired and hit the suspect three times, once in each leg and in one arm.
"The shooter, the second amendment rights defender, I guess you would say then took his gun out firing several rounds taking the bank robber down,” said Fouts, praising the man’s actions.
"The good guy won over the bad guy and I think there is very little sympathy for someone who shows up at a bank and pulls a gun, a loaded gun, out on innocent people,” said Fouts.
Fouts said this could have been a matter of life and death.
"You have to assume that fleeing felon, a person who just robbed a bank of thousands of dollars would have hopped into his car and anybody in his way, he had a loaded gun, he might have shot someone,” said Fouts.
Mayor Fouts says the man will likely get a commendation, but it will depend on the final outcome of the law enforcement investigation.
