WARREN, Mich. (WXYZ) — As patriots prepare for the Fourth of July celebration, a metro Detroit mayor calls for stricter state laws on fireworks.
Warren Mayor Jim Fouts is concerned about residents in his city who suffer from PTSD, animals affected by the bombardments, and elderly in the community.
Fouts said the Michigan Fireworks Safety Acts passed by the state last year is harmful to his community.
The bipartisan bill revamped the law to limit dates and times fireworks can be lit. It also gives more control to cities and counties to regulate temporary firework structures, and the ability to increase fines for violations.
Warren's mayor said it's not enough to protect some of the most vulnerable citizens he serves.
