DETROIT (WXYZ) — 7 Action News is committed to bringing you stories of opportunities in our community.

Since the economic downturn from the pandemic, millions of Americans have lost their jobs including across Detroit and the surrounding areas. Wayne County Community College will soon open a 23-acre facility for skilled trade jobs.

The new Outdoor Careers Training Center campus is located in Northwest Detroit on Greenfield Road, just south of Joy Road, the site of WCCCD’s original and former Northwest Campus.

A release from the college said, DTE Energy and Consumers Energy are partnering with WCCCD to train workers in fields that include underground and overhead utility line work, as well as utility line construction education, and utility technician and testing roles. That work, as well as work in the construction trades, heavy equipment operation, and small contractor capacity building also allows the campus to act as a hub for small business and minority business enterprises in the region.

The center will add acres of space for specialized training for utilities, civil technology and testing, construction trades, demolition, housing rehab, equipment operation, truck driving, road construction, and entrepreneurship.

The Outdoor Careers Training Center will open during the Fall 2020 semester.
