With the recent string of suspicious packages targeting high profile politicians and media outlets, the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office has released tips on what to do should you receive one.

Deputies urge residents to say something if they see something. Sheriff Clayton says being mindful and vigilant is the best way to help police.

So what makes a package suspicious?

  • Any unattended item such as a bag or small box that is hidden or atypical
  • No return address
  • Oily stains on packaging
  • Excessive tape/letters sealed with tape
  • Excessive postage
  • Incorrect title or address
  • Strange odor
  • Misspelled words/badly typed or written

What should you do if you come across one?

Don't handle the package, isolate the area and call 911 immediately. If you do handle the package, wash your hands with soap and water as soon as possible.
