(WXYZ) — If the old saying “beauty is pain” is something you grew up hearing -- then can you wrap your head around a “vampire facial? ”
Vampire facials have gone mainstream thanks to big-name celebrities and everyday people looking for the fountain of youth.
Vampire facials, also known as a plasma-rich protein facial, involves injecting nutrient-rich plasma into your skin using a tool called a micro-needling pen.
The plasma is usually extracted from your own skin. Experts say when done safely, it can be effective at rejuvenating the skin.
In fact, there are several “skin boutiques” and medical spas in Metro Detroit that “vampire facials.”
However, the practice has come under the microscope after two people who received vampire facials at a New Mexico spa tested positive for HIV.
