(WXYZ) — It’s Halloween — and that means plenty of families are making plans to trick-or-treat despite the rain.

But with so many kiddos hitting the street for trick or treating, it’s important to stay safe with what we’re eating too. That’s why after you’re done with this – all the trick-or-treating – you’ve got candy screenings happening tonight in Southfield.

I caught up with the emergency management folks who will go through every piece of candy so you can have piece of mind.

“Our volunteers welcome you — they fan out the candy, they inspect it," said Frank Coutts, the Southfield Homeland Security Coordinator. "We do the metal detector. We do a good reading — a lot of candy has foil and gives us a false positive. That’s why we do a visual inspection to confirm it’s okay. Southfield is a community… we love our residents and our neighbors… you’re welcome to come.”

The candy screening with be held at the Southfield Sports Arena from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. That’s on the city complex across from the library.

It’ll be lit up, and parents and kids, whether residents or non-residents, just come right in.

Everyone’s welcome.
