(WXYZ) — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has apologized after telling people to "Google it" if they needed a haircut.

Speaking to Mojo in the Morning on Thursday, Whitmer said it was an "off-hand comment," adding she didn't mean to offend people.

"I think that it is important, it's licensed for a reason," she said. "These are professionals who take it seriously and intimately interact with the public, and that's why we have to take this seriously."

Salons across Michigan want to know when they can reopen. There are growing calls for Whitmer to allow salons to safely reopen as business owners say they are ready.

Earlier this week, Whitmer moved the entire state into phase 4 of the MI Safe Start Plan opening up restaurants, bars, retail stores and more, but salons and barbers weren't included.

After the comment, social media erupted angry at Whitmer.

"If my comment offended people, I do apologize for that," she said.
