LAPEER, Mich. (WXYZ) — The Lapeer County Sheriff's Office said two adults and two children in a stroller were hit by a car while walking on Monday night.

According to deputies, three adults were walking while pushing a double stroller north on Peppermill Rd. They were out for an evening walk from a home that started around 8:30 p.m. about a mile down the road.

We're told they were going over a two-lane bridge that doesn't have roadway shoulders and isn't designed for pedestrian traffic, and witnesses said they were in the northbound lane walking with the flow of traffic.

Deputies say a 1999 Chevy Cavalier was traveling north on Peppermill when it hit four out of the five pedestrians on the bridge. The vehicle and pedestrians came to rest about 75 feet north of the bridge.

According to police, the crash happened after dark, the area was not equipped with street lights and the pedestrians were wearing dark-colored clothing.

A 26-year-old woman from Lapeer and the mother of the children invovled was walking in the back of the group. She moved to the side of the roadway and avoided being hit.

A 24-year-old man from Flint was pushing the stroller and was hit. He was treated and released from the hospital.

A 27-year-old woman from Caro was pushing the stroller and sustained life-threatening injuries. She is at McLaren Lapeer in serious condition in the ICU.

A 3-year-old in the stroller was also taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. The child was immediately transferred to Hurley Medical Center in Flint and admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit and is in serious condition.

A 4-year-old in the stroller was also hit but was treated and released.

We're told the 22-year-old driver of the vehicle was not injured, and preliminary investigation does not show distracted driving, excess speed, or alcohol/drugs as factors in the crash.

Police say factors of the crash include pedestrians being in the roadway, no lighting and dark clothing.
