(WXYZ) — In phase 4 of the state’s reopening, the vast majority of metro Detroiters are now getting the green light to return to work. But it brings up some important questions and reminders for the unemployed to avoid getting into hot water.
When it comes to workplace safety, employers are expected to provide you with face masks, hand sanitizer, and proper social distancing.
So simply feeling unsafe to return isn’t enough to refuse work and collect unemployment. However, if you’re immuno-compromised or have an underlying condition, have a conversation with your employer about the leave policy at your job.
Ask your employer about a reasonable accommodation. And be in touch with the unemployment office about your need to continue benefits. When notifying unemployment about your return, do it online within the unemployment account you already have.
You can notify them of partial return and potentially still partially collect benefits. However, you have to be trying to find full-time work elsewhere. Don't delay in your reporting the update to the unemployment agency.
As soon as you begin working again, report your return to work. Don’t make the mistake of waiting until you receive your first paycheck. Overlapping pay will put you in hot water, costing you fines, loss of future benefits, and potential criminal prosecution.
