DETROIT (WXYZ) -- The Detroit chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America honored Justin Verlander with its Tiger of the Year award on Thursday.
Verlander earned nine of 22 possible first-place votes, edging out Ian Kinsler, who received eight first-place votes. This is the third time Verlander has received the award, and his first since 2011.
Verlander finished the 2016 season with a 16-9 record and 3.04 ERA. He also led the American League with 254 strikeouts.
