STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- Bryn Forbes scored 20 points, and No. 5 Michigan State welcomed back Denzel Valentine with a 92-65 rout of Penn State on Sunday.

Forbes made six of the Spartans' 10 3-pointers and scored all his points in the first half in a game in which they never trailed. Valentine returned from his knee injury to score all 10 of his points after the break.

Eron Harris and Gavin Schilling each scored 13 points for Michigan State (16-1, 3-1 Big Ten).

Valentine got off to a slow start as he shook off the rust, and coach Tom Izzo challenged him during timeouts. Valentine made his first basket just over six minutes into the second half.

He hit three of his next five shots, including a mid-range jumper with 7:22 to play to give the Spartans a 31-point lead, their largest of the afternoon.

Forbes made three 3-pointers in the final 3:12 of the first half to help put Michigan State up 40-27 at the break.

Shep Garner scored 19 points for Penn State (10-7, 1-3). Julian Moore added 13 and Devin Foster had 12.

Michigan State: Izzo had plenty of chances to get all his players minutes. Only four -- Forbes, Harris, Valentine and Lourawls Nairn Jr. -- played more than 21 minutes, while all but two more played at least five minutes. Forbes played just nine minutes in the second half.

Penn State: Brandon Taylor was honored before the game as the latest member of Penn State's 1,000-point club. He entered the game with 1,030 career points and is 26th on the school's all-time scoring list.
