DETROIT (WXYZ) -- UDM honored 2015 Basketball Hall of Famer Spencer Haywood by retiring his number before Friday's game at Calihan Hall.

As part of the ceremony, the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame also presented Haywood with a plaque commemorating his career accomplishments.

"UDM was very special because I was playing at home," Haywood told Kacie Hollins before the ceremony.

"My best memory was winning my high school state championship, and the next-best was the Olympics, and then I came here. What a year. It was basketball at its finest."

Haywood fondly recalled the atmosphere at Calihan Hall during his playing days.

"There was never an empty seat in here, and never a dry eye. It was wonderful, like a spirit of home."
