Harbaugh rips 'knee-jerk' ban of satellite camps

Posted

Jim Harbaugh made his first public comments about the NCAA's ban of satellite camps.

And he's not holding back.

Michigan's head coach talked with Sports Illustrated's Michael Rosenberg about the latest restrictions.

Harbaugh said the ban was "knee-jerk ... like somebody was shaving in the morning, cut themselves when they were shaving and said, 'Let's just ban satellite camps.'"

He's had other coaches and players come to his defense since the ruling came down last week.

"I mean, what's it based on? A survey? There wasn't a lot of discussion or study. What are the facts? What are the perils and merits of making that decision? It just seemed lacking in that regard," he told SI.

Harbaugh is at the center of the new ruling, because he led a satellite camp tour around the south last year that put players in front of his coaching staff.

It's been going on in sports (not just football) for years, and yet, as soon as Harbaugh took it to a larger level, the SEC, ACC, and ultimately, the NCAA cried foul.

Harbaugh lashed out on the NCAA's use of the term 'student-athlete.'

"I suggest we drop the term 'student-athlete' for consistency," he told Rosenberg.
