Michigan vs. Michigan State is always a fierce rivalry, regardless of the sport being played. When you throw in a brand new 'Iron D' trophy and a sold out crowd at Joe Louis Arena, the rivalry is intensified.
The Spartans and Wolverines have been polar opposites with success this season. Michigan State has lost 18 games, and have been outscored 15-5 in the two meetings with Michigan this year.
On the other hand, Michigan's hockey team has elevated itself to elite status. The Wolverines are ranked fifth in the country and climbing and they have the highest scoring offense in the league.
That said, anything can happen with an in-state rivalry game. The Wolverines say they're not taking the Spartans lightly Friday night. They know the Spartans have a lot to play for.
