OPINION: Could PGA head back to Detroit?

and last updated

With the news breaking of the exhibition match between golf's youngest stars Rory McIlroy and Ricky Fowler at the Detroit Golf Club you have to wonder, could this be the seed for more PGA events in the area in the future?

Quicken Loans is the driving force behind many of Detroit's cornerstone events, namely the Grand Prix, but QL owner Dan Gilbert's significant investment in the city's infrastructure cannot be overlooked.

While the event is still not 'official,' Quicken Loans has released a statement about their efforts in making this all happen.

Quicken Loans is constantly exploring ways to highlight the energy and technology revolution taking place in Detroit, while supporting the community where we live, work and play.  A primetime golf event with two of the world’s greatest golfers is definitely a unique opportunity to achieve this goal.  While there is no imminent announcement about such a unique event, we continue to explore ways to show off this great American city.

Did I mention it will be aired nationally, live, and at night?

Add in the likes of Justin Timberlake and Mark Walberg as celebrity partners to the fourth and fifth best golfers in the world, and you're almost guaranteed a winner.

Since the Buick Open left Warwick Hills in 2009, the PGA hasn't shown an interest in returning, but if this event draws as well as it should, the PGA should re-examine their position on that.

Detroit is a growing city with rebirth everywhere you look.

Adding another reason for tourists to rediscover this city is a no brainer, something that Quicken Loans would likely be interested in doing amongst their other efforts.
