Posted

The Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs will get a rematch of the 2014 NHL Winter Classic next year, according to Sportsnet's Elliote Friedman.

Friedman confirmed the news during a Hockey Night in Canada headlines segment on Saturday.

“We are still expecting Toronto on January 1 with the Detroit Red Wings as the opponent," Friedman said. "They had a tremendously successful outdoor game a couple of years ago in Ann Arbor.”

The two met in the Winter Classic at The Big House on Jan. 1, 2014 in front of a record crowd. The Maples Leafs won the game 3-2 in a shootout.

It's not clear where the game will be held, but according to Fansided, BMO Field is the likely option. It is home to to Toronto FC and the only natural outdoor stadium in the city.

The game will also align with the 100th anniversary of the Maple Leafs.
