A more active hurricane season begins June 1

The Atlantic Hurricane Season officially begins June 1 and lasts through the end of November.

The National Hurricane Center issued their annual outlook for the season, and their forecast is calling for a season more active than any of the previous three years — 2015, 2014 and 2013.

Their meteorologists are calling for a 45 percent chance of a near normal season with anywhere between four and eight hurricanes in the coming months.

Their forecast is used to get a good estimate of how much activity we can expect to see in the tropics in the next six months, but this isn't a forecast for how many hurricanes and tropical storms will hit the United States.

At the same time, a single storm can cost a number of deaths and injuries as well as billions of dollars in damages.

That's why it's important to pay attention to forecasts and evacuate when authorities make the call to do so.
