For most of the country, the winter of 2015-2016 was a breeze.
One of the strongest El Niños in our recorded history shaped the mild winter with very few bitter cold arctic outbreaks and winter storms we typically associate with the coldest months of the year.

This year, the El Niño is gone, and there's a growing chance for a weak La Niña to take over.
La Niña typically has a smaller effect on winter weather than El Niño.
La Niña winters usually mean warmer and drier across the South while the bitter cold air is reserved for the Northern Plains. Additional rain and snow are likely in store for the Northern Rockies and the Great Lakes.
