Get ready for the first Detroit Music Weekend festival!  From this Thursday through Sunday it will make a statement to the world about the Motor City’s love of music.  All genres will be featured.

In addition to the mighty sounds of rhythm & blues, country, gospel, and rock n roll, there will be lots of art exhibitions, retail booths and food in the theater district along Madison Street bounded by John R and Brush Streets.  Most of the events will be free and open to the public.  Families, with children of all ages, are encouraged to attend.

Detroit Music Weekend is being organized by Vince Paul, President & Artistic Director of the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts and several cultural groups.  The big name attraction of the weekend will be Detroit’s very own Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.  In addition to her free concert, a street will be renamed in her honor.  In all, about 40 different entertainment acts will take place on several stages throughout the district.  The paid events will spotlight Mayer Hawthorne’s band and the R&B Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at the Music Hall.

Recently, I talked to Paul on Spotlight on the News at our downtown Channel 7 studio about the music, the artists, the corporate sponsors and his vision what is promised to be an annual event.  For more information, click on https://www.detroitmusicweekend.org/
