DETROIT (WXYZ) — Detroit police are investigating a vehicle accident that left three people dead on the city's southwest side on New Year's Eve.

The incident happened at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and 16th Street late Thursday night. Police responded to a 911 call of a multi-vehicle accident in Corktown around 10:40 p.m.

An 87-year-old man was operating a 2017 Cadillac and traveling west on Michigan when his vehicle collided into a Mercury Sable occupied by two people – a man and woman – that was also traveling west on Michigan Avenue, according to police.

Police say as a result of the collision, the occupants in the Mercury were pronounced dead at the scene. The occupant of the Cadillac was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Detroit Police Fatal Squad investigators are still investigating to determine the events that lead up to the accident.
