Former President Barack Obama has endorsed Democratic candidate Gretchen Whitmer for Michigan governor.

In a statement released on Monday afternoon, Obama said, "Michigan’s middle-class families need a governor who knows how to get things done."

President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence have endorsed her opponent, current Attorney General Bill Schuette who is running on the Republican ticket with Lisa Posthumus Lyons.

“It’s such an honor to have President Obama’s support because as President he fought every day to make sure hardworking Michiganders had access to quality, affordable health care and worked to rescue Michigan’s auto industry, which saved 1.5 million jobs," Whitmer said in a release.

In a tweet, Obama also announced endorsements for Garlin Gilchrist II as Lt. Governor, Elissa Slotkin and Haley Stevens for Congress and a list of those running for state representative and state senate.
