ROMULUS (WXYZ) — Some encouraging news for U.S. airliners. For the first time, Southwest reports more bookings than cancellations.

In fact, multiple airlines are reporting a modest uptick in bookings. It's a turning point in the pandemic that has ravaged domestic and international flights.

Despite the uptick, the demand for flights is still down more than 92% from May 2019.

Prior to the coronavirus outbreak, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne Airport boasted 1,100 daily flights. The airport, which is hub for Delta only, operates a fraction of those flights due to the low demand.

Airport officials told 7 Action News they are compiling data on the number of passengers for the month of April.

The Transportation Security Administration tracks the number of passengers that pass through security screenings.
