(WXYZ) — Hundreds of first responders from across Michigan honored the life of Skylar Herbert, 5, who lost her fight to the coronavirus.

Herbert is the first child to die of COVID-19 in Michigan. She developed a rare form of meningitis and brain swelling while battling the virus.

Skylar's mother has been a Detroit Police officer for 25 years and her father has worked as a firefighter with the Detroit Fire Department for 18 years.

The processional also included a balloon release and emotional words from the little girls parents. Their plea through the pain is for everyone to take this virus seriously.

The Detroit Public Safety Foundation has set up a memorial fund for Skylar. You can find out more here: https://www.detroitpublicsafety.org/
