MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. (WXYZ) — An inmate at the Macomb County jail has tested positive for COVID-19, according to the county sheriff's office.

Sheriff Anthony Wickersham says medical staff informed him of the inmate's positive status. The inmate has been isolated since March 29.

This is the first positive case reported in the Macomb County jail, the sheriff says.

"We have done our best to implement and add procedures that protect our staff and inmates from COVID-19, but unfortunately, no environment is immune. As reported over the past week, our population continues to decline and today we have 540 inmates in a facility that can house 1238," according to Sheriff Wickersham.
